INTRODUCTION

Civil Engineering is a branch of engineering that designs, constructs, and maintains major structures such as bridges, dams, water distribution systems, highways, sanitation facilities, drainage networks, among other areas. It is a very essential discipline in this 21st Century to propel industrialisation worldwide.
The Programme aims at training practically-oriented middle-level and high-level manpower in advanced engineering principles, skills, and professionalism needed to drive the industrialization agenda and contribute to the socio-economic development of Ghana. This programme will equip the graduates with the necessary basic and higher engineering knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to propel them for a professional career in Civil engineering.

Our objectives

i. To train highly skilled Civil Engineering Professionals and Technologist.
ii. Conduct research and disseminate research findings in the Civil Engineering disciplines;
iii. Provide facilities and expertise for training and research in Civil Engineering as well as emerging technologies and trends in the area of Civil Engineering.
iv. To meet the need for a greater number of high-level Technicians and Technologists to facilitate the industrialization of the Ghanaian construction industry.
v. Establish Income generation mechanisms through training and research.
vi. To provide opportunity and training to equip personnel within the construction and Civil Engineering industry with appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to improve their efficiency and effectiveness as high-level supervisory personnel

Programmes in the Department

B.TECH Civil Engineering

The Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering programme is a four-year programme designed to train professionals in the construction, road and environmental sector of Ghana.
Civil Engineering has been the backbone for infrastructural development and industrialization for most developed countries towards socio-economic advancement. Since Ghana is a developing country, specialization in any branch of Civil engineering is an important requirement for development, mostly in the construction industry.
The construction industry plays an essential role in the socio-economic development of a country. The activities of construction firms impact significantly the achievement of the national socio-economic development goals of a country. The construction industry has made a significant contribution to both industrial output and the overall GDP over the years.
Human resource challenges encountered by the construction industry and training institutions in Ghana underpinned the reasoning for the introduction of curricula for the Civil Engineering education programmes.

B.TECH Civil Engineering ( 2 Year Top-up)

The Bachelor of Technology (BTECH) in Civil Engineering is a two-year part-time weekend programme. It is designed to train middle-level management personnel to provide the needed supervisory role to link theory and practice in the Civil Engineering Industry. The programme is structured for diploma graduates in the field of structures, transportation and highway, water and sanitation, environmental and survey in civil engineering.

The programme consists of one-semester industrial training in a civil engineering firm or in a company that specializes in any of the civil engineering areas. Graduates acquire skills and knowledge in the creation and improvement of transportation systems, bridges, railway lines, airports, water supply systems, dams for hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, habour and other civil engineered construction in the country.

HND Civil Engineering

The HND Civil Engineering programme is a three-year full-time programme of study. Students are taken through both theoretical education and practical training. The practical training involves competence training in the use of basic civil engineering equipment for soil mechanics and geotechnical works in the road sector, the use of survey equipment, and water quality analysis. Students are trained to use basic civil engineering software for product design and simulation. Through our well-structured industrial attachment and internships, students are exposed to an industrial setting where they learn how to apply acquired knowledge and skills to solve real industrial problems. This builds their confidence as in-coming Civil Engineers and prepares them for the real world of work Principal courses
a. Fluid Mechanics
b. Hydraulics engineering
c. Geotechnical engineering
d. Highway engineering
e. Transportation engineering
f. Geographic information system (GIS)

Laboratory, Workshops and Research Work

The department has well-equipped laboratories and workshops for training the practical component of the programme. The laboratories include Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Thermal Fluids Lab, water quality lab and Computer simulating lab. The workshops are also equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and Machine. Our research focuses on the following areas: soil and Geotechnical analysis, water quality, structures, remote sensing and GIS, climate change.

Employment prospects for graduates

a) Road Construction: Graduates of the programme will be trained to work on major road construction projects, both urban and rural, using modern survey and construction equipment such as Total Station, GPS and applications of GIS. They will have the skills to operate and manage this equipment. Graduates will also be responsible for supervising the work of road construction operatives and sub-contractors on site. They can also be engaged by firms dealing with related road construction machinery and equipment for sales and consulting services (Design and Build firms).

b) In the private, public, and industrial housing sector, graduates have employment prospects such as supervisors and tradesmen and women in the built environment/Tradesmen. The graduates can find employment with companies such as State Housing Company, Public Works Department (PWD), Constar Construction, etc.

c) Graduates from the programme will also have employment in surveying and consultancy firms such as Survey Department and other private survey firms.
d) They will also have the opportunity to work as sub-contractors for bigger firms and also as graduate design engineers working in the design office for multi-million construction firms.
e) Graduates from the programme could also work with the following institution with which our institution has collaboration with, the institutions are :
• Ghana Highways Authority
• Ghana Rural Feeder Road,
• Urban Roads,
• Architectural and Engineering Service limited (AESL)
• Ghana Water Company
• Municipal Assemblies
• Construction Companies
